Tips for cleaning leather goods
  1. Know your leather. The type of leather you are dealing with dictates the cleaning method you will use. Treated leather is covered with a protective coating, while suede and rawhide are not. A little soap is fine to use on a finished leather couch, but even mild soap can be too harsh on more sensitive leathers. If you're not sure how your skin will react to cleaning, test your cleanser on a very small area.

  2. Avoid homemade cleaning solutions. When it comes to leather, it's best to use either water or cleaning products specifically designed for leather goods. Popular home remedies like baking soda, white vinegar and lemon juice can be harmful to the most sensitive leathers and make the problem worse.

  3. Treat stains as soon as they occur. The best way to avoid wet stains is to treat them immediately by wiping with a soft cloth to remove as much moisture as possible. Then, dab the area with a soft, damp cloth (use warm water - no soap). You can also wet a cloth with leather cleaner—but if you're using a product that comes in a spray bottle, spray it on the cloth first, not directly on the surface of the leather. Do not rub it, as this may leave a water stain. Wipe again with a dry cloth.

  4. Moisturize your leather item. After cleaning the leather with water or a leather cleaner (recommended by a professional), use a conditioner to restore moisture. Gently rub the leather conditioner into your leather item in a circular motion using a brush, sponge, or microfiber cloth .

  5. Dry cleaning for difficult stains. Grease, ink and make-up stains that do not come off after gentle cleaning. They may need to be professionally cleaned.

  6. Over time some wounds heal. Leather is an extremely durable material, and sometimes just letting a leather product absorb the stain is the best option - although it can take weeks or even months.

  7. Protect your leather item. Protect your leather goods by wiping off dirt regularly. Some items, such as leather jackets, may benefit from a waterproofing spray, while others, such as shoes, can be waxed to make them more water resistant.

  8. Store leather goods properly. Keep your leather goods in a dry place away from direct sunlight to avoid discoloration. To help leather bags keep their shape, stuff them with a clean towel or paper and store them in a cloth bag to air them out.
